Cupcakeries
I love to explore cupcakeries from San Diego to Santa Barbara in California and anywhere else in this world I stumble upon a great place with a tasty cupcake selection.
Below are my experiences; I've tasted the good, the bad and the best so you know what to expect when you're heading in for a sweet treat.

Mountain Cupcakes - Vail, CO
I had the pleasure of attending a work trip to Vail, CO with my two bosses at the mountain - Rachel & Rochelle. We had the most luxurious tour of the town and soaked in the beauty of it all, for work purposes. It was actually a very productive field trip, even though we made one quick stop into the cupcake shop - but how could we not?
Mountain Cupcakes, a cupcake shop surrounded by pricey, high end boutiques. I think this shop fits right in - the cupcakes were pricey too, but I had to try at least one. I went for the red velvet, a classic – you can’t go wrong, right? I just wanted to share a few photos from my trip.
I love her unique industrial looking cake stands!
Have you been here before? What’s your favorite cupcake?

Pumpkin Pancake Cupcakes by Annette
Today is a very special day for my friend Annette, she is opening up her first and very own Cupcakery – Goodie Girls in Glendale, CA.
Annette is the type of girl you meet that has an electric aura around her, I was so intrigued by her drive, her passion, her glam style and her energy. She was in the midst of finalizing her cupcakery, securing all the usual last minute touches, health inspection, etc. all the while baking her booty off every day for special orders and celebrity studded events around LA.
She may be the first person that helped to ignite my own aspirations of opening up my little cupcakery one day. I have a lot to thank her for and she may not even know it!
I am so bummed that I couldn’t make the Grand Opening today because I hear it’s going to be absolutely fabulous, but I am so proud of her and excited that I wanted to bake something in celebration.
Among a long list of accomplishments, Annette has won Food Network Season (3) Cupcake Wars and most recently was featured on The Talk with Debi Mazar and Bonnie-Jill Laflin. Here she walks you through one of her amazing cupcake recipes which is the recipe I’ve baked to try for myself.
I halved the recipe for my mini version which made 2 dozen mini cupcakes perfectly. These cupcakes taste just like a pumpkin pancake with a maple buttercream frosting and toasted pecan pieces, you’ll be in heaven.
Tip: I scooped out a tiny hole with my {1/8} tsp. and poked a few holes with a toothpick so that the maple syrup would soak into the cupcake a little but faster. I also frosted the cupcake in a double flower shape to create pockets for the second maple syrup drizzle.

Halloween at Sweet E's Bake Shop
One of my last stops in LA before I headed out to CO was at Sweet E’s Bake Shop. I’ve ran into Erica (owner of Sweet E’s/winner of Cupcake Wars) a few times around the cupcake event circuit in LA and have always noticed that her presentation is absolutely fabulous!
I was excited to see what tricks & treats she would have in store for Halloween and I can tell you she did not dissapoint!
I thought Erica did an amazing job with her cupcakery for the Holiday, the best I’ve seen for Halloween so far.
If you have a chance and are in LA, check it out - I really wanted to buy EVERYTHING inside, but I settled for a half dozen mini Fall cupcakes, and a Blue Velvet cake pop.
If only I could fit into those cupcake costumes...

Big Fat Cupcake - Denver, CO
Yesterday I drove my sister Sara out to the Denver airport, she's been helping me with my move and it was time for her to head back home. Before I made the (3) hour trek back to Steamboat Springs, I decided to check out my first Colorado cupcakery.
I scoped it out beforehand and sent them a tweet to let them know I was coming, to my surprise I got a retweet which made me even more excited to see what this social savvy cupcakery would look like.
The very first thing I noticed was that the name of the place was named so for a reason, Big Fat Cupcake(s) galore!
It may be hard to tell from the photo, but these things were more like small cakes than cupcakes. I loved that you could see the bakery behind the counter and catch a glimpse into what it takes to make all of these cupcakes daily.
It was such a tough decision, but I found two special flavors to take home and taste test. Of course I went for the pink cupcake - Snowball, an appropriate choice for such a snowy day, I thought.
I also chose the Chocolate Salty Caramel Cupcake, a cupcake I’ve attempted to bake at home but have never tried from a cupcakery.
Just look at the caramel drizzle oozing off of this cupcake, how could I resist?
I would have loved to try more, but at almost $(4) a pop, (2) small cakes would have to help me through my review.
I could have always gone with a box of Day Olds, but I prefer mine Day Of. I love that they had the option though, these special cakes should never go to waste!
I also loved the extensive reading collection, anyone read, "If You Give a Cat a Cupcake"?
After I got home I convinced my sister Valerie to taste test these with me before dinner. The Chocolate Salty Caramel was our favorite! The cake was moist and the frosting was the perfect amount of sweet combined with the sprinkle of salt on top.
Actually, I saved a bite for breakfast which I am now consuming as I write my review.
The Snowball was quite delicious as well. You can see the super light & sweet filling, which we felt we could have used less of - and more of the cupcake.
The coconut shreds added some fun texture which helped us to consume the fluffy filling. Overall, this cupcake was certainly a treat, but not something you could eat entirely without falling into a sugar coma.
There's my sister Val with the Snowball, almost as big as her head!
These Big Fat Cupcake(s) were so much fun - to look at, to taste, and I absolutely love visiting a cupcakery with a distinctive charm such as this one. Good news for all you drooling - they ship!
I can't wait to try more cupcakeries in Colorado, so far, I am very impressed!

Crushcakes & Cafe - Carpinteria, CA
If you’ve been following along my cupcake adventures, or evenly most recently on twitter, you may know that I always stop by my favorite cupcakery; Crushcakes whenever I am in Santa Barbara.
I love this little cupcakery & café because they always have such a fun, abundant selection of cupcakes. They have a pretty solid set of signature cupcakes you can count on, but if you like a little variety like me, it’s nice that they are always changing up the flavors, and best of all – they have an espresso bar!
Yesterday I was excited to stop through Carpinteria on my way back to LA and finally scope out their second location, it was ADORABLE!
Carpinteria is such a hidden gem, and Crushcakes & Café fits in perfectly with this rustic little beach town. Every detail of this place was so charming, especially this friendly mantra at the front entrance.
I picked up (2) cupcakes & (1) cup of intelligentsia blend coffee.
My mom met me for lunch and we divvied up the loot for dessert.
(1) Maple Pecan Cupcake of the day, and (1) signature Peace Cake decked out in Holiday colors for Halloween.
We were pretty pleased with our selection of treats, but both agreed – they were very, very sweet!
I loved that the Maple Pecan flavors were very present and bursting with every bite. The pecans were not only the garnish, but were sprinkled in throughout the cake.
The frosting was so light and sweet, which complimented the firm, muffin-like texture of the cake.
This was our favorite out of the (2).
The Peace Cake was a very simple and sweet treat. Vanilla on vanilla, topped with a tasty reminder that this is what cupcakes are all about! Peace! Finding peace in taking the time to enjoy all of the little things in life, like this cupcake!
If you're in Santa Barbara or Carpinteria, Crushcakes & Cafe is a must! I haven't even begun to explore the Cafe section of these locations, so if anyone has had a chance to try, please share your experience.
Happy Friday my little cupcakes!

Scarlett's Cupcakes - Pacific Palisades, CA
After a lovely hike with my good friend Kristin and my pup Roxy in Pacific Palisades, we found ourselves drawn to this little cupcake sign on the road that read, "Vegan Cupcakes!"
I've been very curious to taste vegan and gluten-free cupcakes from gourmet cupcakeries, so Scarlett's Cupcakes would be my first try!
I loved the warm and festive Fall decor in the shop. The sign by the register invited customers back in on Halloween and those wearing costumes recieve a free mini-cupcake!
The pumpkin cupcake above was one of my favorites just from looking at it, and it won us over in the tasting as well.
These creepy chocoloate chip cupcakes were calling my name, but we went with the four below:
Starting from the top left and moving clockwise, we tried:
- Carrot Vegan Cupcake w Cream Cheese Frosting - really good! A little bit more dense and chunky like a carrot cake, rather than a cupcake, but you could not tell it was vegan at all!
- German Chocolate Cupcake w the classic Coconut Frosting - the cake was a bit dry, so we needed to fully cover it with the frosting in order to enjoy the flavors.
- Dark Chocolate Cupcake w Peanut Butter Frosting - another dry one! Maybe it was the chocolate cakes that were not holding up too well, but this one the frosting could not save - way too sweet and thick!
- Pumpkin Cupcake w Cream Chesese Frosting - my favorite! I actually had my hesitations that this cupcake looked like more a muffin, but the Cupcake Lady assured me, this cupcake was moist and delicious. So it was! I loved it, although Kristen said she wished there was more pumpkin flavor, it worked out and I ended up with the rest of the cupcake for myself!
Overall, we were really happy that we decided to check out this adorable cupcakery. We had a fabulous day hiking with the pup and filling up on the flavors of fall. Of course now i'm itching to bake something for myself inspired by this beautiul fall season!
What's got you in the kitchen baking?
Velvet Cupcakes - Valencia, CA
You wouldn't typically find me in Valencia, but I was at the Westfield Valencia Mall for the Grand Opening of our new Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf.
I wandered not too far from the store and cast my eyes upon this cute little cupcakery. You know I had to sneak in for a quick peek. The two girls at the counter greeted me and smiled.
I asked them which cupcake was their favorite and I was eagerly offered up 4 or 5 different suggestions. Apparently they are all favorites.
I went for these two beauties.
Chocolate Hazelnut on the left was perfectly rich and sweet. The cupcake was very moist and the frosting was light and fluffy. It's described as a chocolate cake with nutella buttercream frosting, although I didn't really pick up any hazelnut or nutella flavors throughout.
Strawberry on the right! You know by now I could never say no to a pink cupcake. Well I'm glad I didn't, I loved it! Something about this cupcake made me eat it all up without even stopping to take a breath, or perhaps a sip of water like a normal person! Every bite was sweet but buttery too! It's described as a strawberry cupcake with strawberry buttercream frosting.
One thing I was on the fence about these was that the cupcake was really dense with an almost muffin like texture, rather than fluffy and moist like the Hazelnut Cupcake I tried earlier. Ultimately, the flavor was so surprisingly tasty, and I can only guess they used a great amount of butter to achieve that flavor, but overall it's a favorite.
Overall Review:
I really liked this cupcakery! They have an adorable website with really beautiful cupcake photography at velvetcupcakes.com.
I only wish this cupcakery were located in LA for my random cupcake orders and tastings. I guess a trip to Valencia might be in my deck of cards after all!
Check out the rest of my fun cupcake photos:
WhoDidily Cupcakes - Montecito, CA
WhoDidily Cupcakes is perhaps one of the cutest cupcakeries I have ever seen. It is truly the Candyland of the cupcake world.
I've found that location is a key ingredient into making any cupcakery really stand out, and this one is nestled perfectly on Coast Village road along the upscale beach town of Montecito, CA.
Now you may have recognized the name of this cupcakery from Cupcake Wars, that's because the owner Wendy Jones, her husband and head baker Dave appeared twice to compete. No matter the results of the show.. these cupcakes win hands down in my diary.
I walked up to take a look at the selection and this darling woman (later to find out, Wendy's mother) comes out from behind the counter to ask me if I had ever been there before, then offered to talk me the through the entire selection. She described each cupcake flavor, the filling, the frosting and any other amazing ingredient details. It was so hard to choose, but the cupcakes I did pick were amazing!
The WhoDidily
The WhoDidily was my first choice. It's a confetti cake with a cream center topped with fudge frosting and sprinkled with rainbow mini candy kisses.
This cupcake looks like a birthday cake and tastes like one too. It was perfectly moist with a great flavor of yellow cake and fudge frosting that was rich and chocolaty but not too sweet.
The Scrumdidily and the Lolligagger have the same cookie dough filling and buttercream frosting, but it was a choice between the vanilla or the chocolate cake.
Scrumdidily
I went with the Scrumdidily, the vanilla cake, and absolutely LOVED it! The cookie dough filling was so amazing, the frosting had the perfect flavor and texture.
The one thing about this cupcake is that there was actually a little too much frosting. It was hard to take that first bite without getting hot pink buttercream up my nose, so I just scraped a little off the top and it was perfect!
Next up, the 'I Love You a Latte" cupcake. Cupcakes and coffee might just be my two favorite indulgences in the world, so I had to give this one a try.
I Love You A Latte
This is a chocolate cupcake with a coffee cream cheese center topped with vanilla buttercream and rolled in coffee sprinkles.
It was absolutely to die for amazing! I literally felt like I might die while I was eating it. It was rich and moist and creamy and sweet and chocolaty and coffee flavorful! I am not sure really how to describe it otherwise, so you must try it for yourself.
Overall Review
I highly recommend this cupcakery to everyone! It was just too cute, the selection was fantastic and the cupcakes were some of the best cupcakes I have ever tasted.
This picture above is from the WhoDidily website, and I love the fact that Wendy and Dave are such a young fun couple, entrepreneurial and adventurous. I also love the fact that they are huge Johnny Cupcake fans and supporters. So please continue to do what you do best at your cupcakery, Make Cupcakes Not War. :)
Check out the pictures below, they even hot glue a jewel onto the ribbon when you ask for it to go!

Magnolia Bakery - Los Angeles, CA
Magnolia Bakery has been getting some pretty decent reviews, one in particular by LA blogger, Caroline on Crack. Apparently there was some fancy blogger soiree here last week, so sad I missed out!
Well just because my invitation got lost in the mail doesn't mean I was deterred from a cupcake taste test, so I headed on over.
I love how this bakery is positioned on the corner of 3rd & Orlando, full of big bright windows so you can see the sweet goodness inside. They had a special section for each tasty dessert; cakes, pies, cupcakes! You know I headed straight to my section.
I also loved that they had some fancy Halloween cupcakes. There's no better way to celebrate a holiday then with themed cupcakes, so I swooped up one of these for the taste test.
They also had a an orange cupcake with orange cream/meringue buttercream. I knew I had to have a taste of these too.
Orange Cupcake w Orange Cream/Meringue Buttercream
Hello Orange? Are you there??
So this one was a sad disappointment... I should have guessed because the cupcake was actually white and not orange, but really? No orange flavor at all? Nope..
Just a white cake with thick and boring frosting.. please spare yourself the extra calories. That's what i'm here for.. you!
Halloween Cupcakes!
Well I did love the Halloween cupcakes! Great presentation, great taste. The frosting was perfectly sweet and the black bat sprinkles added a perfect little crunch.
The chocolate cake was pretty moist and tasty too, and the cupcake as a whole was something I would buy a dozen of for a special Halloween gathering.
Overall Review:
So unfortunately I was not able to try more then the two I described for you. Cupcakes are running about $3.25 and when you buy two, well that comes to $6.50! right?.. yup I got the same total when I double checked ;).
I do need to save some cash for my list of cupcakeries and bakeries in LA which I plan to visit, at least one a week. Magnolia Bakery, feel free to invite me to your next get together. I will happily review more of your cupcakes, on the house.
The cupcake presentation was beautiful, I loved the bakery and sweet charm of the place, but as for an overall review.. I'd say it was a hit and miss.
Check out these adorable pics of the place, and please, let me know what you think.

Super bummed I missed out on this tasting! Thanks for the heads up on the Orange cupcake with so-called Orange meringue... money saved for another cupcake. Love the Halloween ones! They look delicious and yes, I totally agree that the best way to celebrate the holidays are with themed cupcakes!!!

No worries, but you better be at the next tasting :) The shirt above "I (cupcake) LA" too cute! We need those!

I've been to the original Magnolia Bakery in New York. It's a super small place on a corner in the west village, and it's ALWAYS packed (as in, wait in a line outside to get in, and get out as soon as you're finished!). I got a box of cupcakes to try every flavor and I was really impressed. It's too bad that the west coast location disappoints!

Thanks Elise.. my coworker actually said the same thing, not only about the Orange Cupcakes, but the Lemon ones too.
Let me know if you try out the west coast Magnolia, I would love to hear what you think.
Sugar Bear's Cupcake Shack - Ventura, CA
A start up cupcakery to start.
Sugar Bear's Cupcake Shack was everything amateur in cupcake world. The only thing that really screamed cupcakes were the balloons outside the storefront.
The inside of this cupcakery offered a only a few different selections of seemingly gourmet cupcakes. Although this could have turned off any other cupcake fan, my cupcake tasters agreed to help me evaluate this particular cupcakery; the first in Ventura, California.
I was immediately attracted to the Strawberry Cupcakes which turned out to be our only fav. I must input that two of my cupcake tasters Chris and Mikey, happen to be professionally trained chefs who know a thing or two about gourmet cupcakes.
We also tried the Red Velvet, Sugar Bear's signature cupcake and a chocolate peanut butter combo. In all cases, the frosting was way too sweet for the cupcake. Chris and Mikey agreed that the buttercream frosting really just tasted like butter.
We could be spoiled, but we truly believed these cupcakes were not even close to the nearby Santa Barbara and Los Angeles competition.
Overall Review:
Sorry Sugar Bear's but your cupcakes were too sweet for us! We would recommend a more aggressive approach to different cupcake flavors, selection, and frosting.
Ultimately April and I had a great time cupcake tasting and we were thankful for the professional opinions of Chris and Mikey, thanks guys!
Frosted - Hollywood, CA
The reflection you see in the photograph above is Hollywood! Crazy, busy traffic, but on the corner of Highland and Lexington Avenue is a light blue building called Frosted Cupcakery.
Not the cutest store front, but truly the cutest assortment of cupcakes. They had so many flavors available, I wanted to photograph all of them. Even for a congested corner location, this place was steady and busy with business, so it was hard to squeeze in and get some shots.
My good friend April, who helped me at Cupcake Camp Santa Barbara, was there to taste test with me. We chose the Strawberry Cream Cheese and Chocolate Mint Chip.
Strawberry Cream Cheese &
Chocolate Mint Chip
The Strawberry Cream Cheese cupcake was absolutely amazing! I know, I just had to choose the pink cupcake, but the flavors just sounded so appetizing and they were the perfect combination.
The Chocolate Mint Chip was a chocolate cupcake topped with a mint buttercream and little chocolate chunks inside. This cupcake tasted exactly like chocolate mint chip ice cream!
I really liked the texture of the frosting. It was a little hard and crisp almost, and then soft and ooey gooey when cut into. Both of the cupcakes were light and fluffy yet very moist.
Red Velvet Cream Cheese
April has also tried the Red Velvet Cream Cheese cupcake and said it was pretty amazing.
She said the texture was just like the Strawberry Cream Cheese, not dense or thick like traditional red velvet, but still very delicious.
Orange Cream Cheese
The Orange Cream Cheese cupcake was also a favorite. They are covered entirely in white chocolate shavings.
I think we just really like cream cheese! But it was great consistency and perfect topping for a lot of their cupcakes.
Overall Review:
As I mentioned earlier, the storefront was nothing to write home about, but for the Hollywood area, they have definitely made themselves noticeable.
The cupcakes are something to write home about, order dozens and enjoy! They actually only allow walk-in customers to order up 2 dozen cupcakes, pretty smart for the type of traffic they get. But they will happily accept special orders, and even make your cupcakes extra special with creative candy toppers and designs.
I also loved that they sold everything you could need to deliver a special cupcake to someone deserving. They had cards and candles, gift boxes, ribbons, and even decorative cupcake display towers for sale.
This is your go-to cupcakery in Hollywood, hands down.
The Latest Crave - Geneva, IL
In the cutest little town of Geneva, IL there is an adorable cupcakery called "The Latest Crave".
They sure knew how to make a crave-worthy cupcake! We sampled a few different flavors, and I definitely found my favorite; the Blackbottom Cupcake.
Blackbottom Cupcake
The Blackbottom Cupcake is a dark chocolate cake with baked in cream cheese and chocolate chip filling.
Pictured here, this delectable cupcake was sprinkled in pink, brown and blue colored chocolate shavings atop a perfectly textured cream cheese frosting.
Absolutely mouth watering amazing!
Snickerdoodle Cupcake
We also tried the Snickerdoodle Cupcake. A cinnamon marble cake topped with cinnamon butter cream frosting and a small snickerdoodle cookie!
The picture here shows the inside, it was a sweet moist cupcake and the cookie topping was an extra special treat.
Key Lime & Vanilla/Vanilla
The Key Lime filled cupcakes were ooey gooey amazing, but a little too tart for my taste. The inside of this cupcake is pictured above.
The Vanilla on Vanilla Cupcake was sweet and delicious, but didn't seem as special compared to our other samples. We might have suggested vanilla bean speckles in the frosting, or something else to liven up this cupcake.
Overall Review:
From the outside decor alone, I knew this cupcakery would be something special. It was a classic style bakery inside and featured a cottage like seating area with white tables and chairs for you to sit and enjoy your cupcake collection.
They also sold frosting shots which was something new and different for a cupcakery I have not seen. I did not get to sample these, but I grabbed a quick shot to share above. Pretty cute huh?
If you are anywhere near the area, you must stop by for a cupcake bite. You won't be disappointed, especially if you order the Blackbottom Cupcake!
