Pupcakes!

Pupcakes are for puppies!

I was so inspired to make dog friendly cupcakes for my friend's dog Rufus' 3rd birthday. Luckily I have my own pupcake tasters at home; 2 amazing little beagles, Roxy & Red.

They were more then happy to taste my pupcake creation; Banana & Applesauce w Peanut Butter Frosting, and of course bits of dog food garnish.

I found some recipes online and adapted them according to what I had in my kitchen. I also made sure all of the ingredients were dog friendly, and had no added sugar.

I can't really tell you how they tasted, but I can show you some great pictures of Roxy & Red enjoying the pupcakes and having a difficult time restraining themselves for the photos.

You can find the recipe below. Let me know if you make them for your puppies. I was also thinking about a pumpkin pupcake, because sometimes Roxy needs pumpkin in her diet for digestive reasons. I think you could create a variety of flavors!

Pupcakes Recipe:

makes 12 standard and 24 minis

The Pupcake:
3 cups whole wheat flour

1 tablespoon baking powder

1 ripe banana

4 oz. natural applesauce

2 tablespoons honey

1 egg, room temperature

2 cups water

dog food & treats for garnish

1. Preheat oven to 350*F. Spray standard or mini cupcake tins with non-stick cooking oil.  Sift together flour and baking powder.

2. With an electric mixer on medium-high speed, cream banana, applesauce and honey. Add egg until combined. Reduce speed to low. Add flour mixture in three batches, alternating with two additions of water, and beating until just combined after each.

3. Divide batter evenly, filling each about 3/4 full. Bake, rotating tines halfway through, until golden and a toothpick inserted in centers comes out clean, 25 minutes for standard cupcakes, 15 minutes for minis.

The Frosting:

6 oz. cream cheese, room temperature

6 oz. peanut butter

2 tablespoons honey

With an electric mixer on medium-high speed, beat cream cheese and peanut butter until fluffy. Add honey, and beat until combined.

To Finish:

Pipe neatly or spread a spoonful of frosting onto the top of cooled pupcakes.

Sprinkle on dog food, or place a special dog treat onto the top of your pupcakes for presentation and let the puppies enjoy!

Try substituting the whole wheat flour with rice flour. Hope this helps :)

I have never heard of a puppy cupcake before, such a creative idea and so modern! I will definitely be cooking these for my pup someday in the near future!
